1964年創立以来、カーネギーホール、プラハの春音楽祭ほか世界31ヵ国151におよぶ都市で公演を行ない、その中でアイザック・スターン、ヨーヨーマやゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団、ニューヨークフィルとの共演を実現し、海外でも高い評価を得ています。
国内でも年間100回以上の演奏を行い、これらの活動に対して1967年芸術祭奨励賞、1970年芸術大賞、1971年芸術祭優秀賞、 1978年第２回音楽之友社賞、レミーマルタン音楽賞、1988年松尾芸能賞特別賞、1990年モービル音楽賞など数々の賞を受賞。
日本を代表する邦楽グループとして現代邦楽に新たな可能性を求め、その活力を21世紀に伝えるべく活動を続けています。
